"
Self Healing By Learning To Connect"
By Lewis Harrison

We are social animals to the core. If you look around you it becomes obvious that human beings are social animals. We look strangely at hermits and naturally take to others. You cannot live without other people. No matter how advanced our technological society becomes, you depend or rely on people. The quality of the people you choose to become involved with either professionally, socially or romantically can define the difference between a life of joy and celebration or a life of and struggle.

Relationships are always changing. People do not remain the same over time. There are external circumstances and influences that affect them. People often feel that there are rules they should somehow know about to make a romance or friendship grow and yet they don't know exactly what they should be doing or how they should be doing it. Some of us have poor communication skills. Others are intensely focused on their ambitions and personal difficulties and, as a result they do not know how to get close to others. What is the key? Learning to love!

You cannot be happy without love! According to the great Persian spiritual teacher Meher Baba:

"Love has to spring spontaneously from within; it is in no way amendable to any form of inner or outer force. Love and coercion can never go together, but while love cannot be forced upon anyone it can be awakened through love itself. Love is essentially self-communicative; those who do not have it catch it from those who have it. Those who receive love from others cannot be its recipients without giving a response. That is the nature of love. True love is unconquerable and irresistible. It continues to gather power and spreading itself until eventually it transforms everyone it touches. Humanity will attain to a new mode of being and life through the free and unhampered interplay of pure love from heart to heart. "

On The Golden Rule:

As in all things the golden rule seems to be a good working guideline to help you to nurture your relationships. Simply put, "Try Not to Do Things To Others That You Would Not Like Them to Do to You."

Always act with a sense of fairness to others: This is an extension of the golden rule. No one wants to be manipulated or given false information. It is important to be able to appreciate honestly, with sensitivity towards your feelings.

Act with compassion toward others: There is a saying that, if given the opportunity, human beings will always disappoint us. There is much truth to this and yet there is as much joy as there is sadness in this idea, for it offers you the opportunity to be forgiving of the shortcomings and mistakes of others. Instead of attacking a person's errors, inquire as to some way you can offer support to correct the situation. Learn tolerance rather than concentrating on punishment. Sometimes it may seem to be impossible to forgive some transgressions but look into it anyway, even as a theoretical possibility.

Intimacy is nurtured in many ways: Be forgiving, benevolent, kind, and generous. Trust your mate and treat him/her with respect and dignity. Explore ways in which your mate is to be admired. Acknowledge others verbally, and be friendly whenever possible. Express justness, loyalty, good sportsmanship, fairness, honesty, kindness, consideration, compassion, self-control, tolerance, forgiveness, benevolence, belief, respect, politeness, dignity, admiration, friendliness, love, and do so with integrity.
